Anatomy Trains invites you to join Master Dissector Todd Garcia and Anatomy Trains senior instructor Thadd Dudrey for a one-of-a kind dissection experience where we will explore the specialized aspects of the leg, ankle and foot in walking.

Walking with an upright, bipedal gait is a uniquely human activity. During walking, the average step lasts less than a second, so the foot has to go through some complex changes where it quickly goes from a loose, mobile adaptor to a rigid lever with each step. With the help of the lower extremity from a fresh tissue donor, Todd and Thadd will be exploring these functional movements of the foot and leg in the upright position.

Using just the leg we will be able to mimic the motions of gait from heel strike to toe off in the loaded position. We will also be demonstrating how the natural design of the  structure works with mass and momentum to create pronation and supination in closed chain biomechanics through the stance phase of gait. We will explore the eccentric actions of each of the Anatomy Trains running through the lower extremity and how they absorb shock, create a stable base and then produce a rigid lever to push off with.

During this 3 hour dissection we will dive into the following:

  • The closed chain biomechanics of the foot during the stance phase
  • Following the motions of the bones and muscles through the gait cycle while the foot is on the ground
  • Creating an in-depth understanding of pronation and supination of the foot
  • Explaining the actions of the Anatomy Trains in the leg during the stance phase of gait
  • The importance of eccentric contractions to the gait cycle
  • A full explanation and demonstration of how the architecture of the skeleton and the Anatomy Trains are designed to naturally absorb impact forces to slow pronation and create automatic supination as the body moves over the foot
  • Description of the cuboid locking mechanism
  • Demonstrating the Windlass Mechanism of Hicks
  • Clear dissection of the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the foot
  • Understanding the structures that create and maintain the integrity of the longitudinal and transverse arches of the foot
  • Showing different ways of dividing the structure of the foot: toe foot vs. heel foot  – rear/mid/barefoot
