Part of the We’ve got your back: Stability and Freedom through Neurovascular Release series.

Thank you for your interest. Registration for this course is now closed. Please email info@anatomytrains.com with any questions!

In this masterclass for structural integrators and manual therapists working with the client seated and in motion, practitioners will learn to work strategically with the intercostal spaces. Our focus will be on freeing the nerves and vessels that accompany the ribs around the body and emerge from the muscle layers to supply the skin and abdominal muscles. This is a unique approach to freeing up the rib cage and lower abdomen resulting in more expansive breathing, balanced rotation, improved left-right symmetry, and a reduction in posterior tilt of the ribcage (which improves anterior-posterior balance throughout the body). In addition, you will be curious about witnessing how intercostal work improves shoulder flexion.

We will be working with the client lying on their side and also seated on a firm bench or on a pair of upright kitchen chairs or folding chairs. A massage table that is set at a low level will also work. This sequence of techniques for the rib cage and waist area are Kier’s expansion upon the work that they described in the 2014 article “Tiger Stripes.” Kier has been improving upon this approach over the last seven years and has found ways to nuance the work to meet a variety of needs.

In this class you can expect to:

  • Help athletes fine-tune their spinal mechanics, achieving greater symmetry in rotation and side-bending
  • Improve anterior-posterior balance and left-right balance throughout the spine and pelvis
  • Improve tone and balance within the abdominal muscles
  • Bring breath into the lower lungs, specifically into the costopleural recess
  • Strategically address scoliosis as well as minor bends and rotations within the thoracolumbar spine
  • Improve shoulder flexion through release of the intercostal nerves

Some of you will already have learned the seated intercostal work during your ATSI training, however, you may want to update and refresh your understanding through this masterclass— Kier will give particular attention to explaining the benefits of this approach for the central nervous system, and they will spend more time teaching side-lying work that prepares the way for the integrative seated work. If you are an ATSI practitioner, this approach to working the intercostal spaces can fit into a Lateral Line session, a Spiral Line session, a Deep Back Line session and/or an Upper Body Integration session.

(Note that these techniques are taught in the longer courses: Manual NVR-SI Part 1 and Manual NVR Part 3.)

You will need a client or volunteer bodywork model to get the most benefit from this masterclass.

Note: If you cannot attend this course live, each session will be recorded and the recording made available to all registrants for 45 days.

To ensure a high quality student experience, registration for this class will CLOSE on Friday, November 19th, at 8 PM EDT.

Please note: Because this is a live Zoom meeting, space is limited. We encourage you to register early!
