The body speaks in many languages. In this evening discussion we will explore how deep and lasting patterns of tension shape the body and its expression. Often the posture is expressing two contradictory impulses, for instance, the urge to move forward, but the fear holds us back.
Tom Myers has spent a half century deeply exploring these patterns all over the world. Tom covers how these patterns come about, how we can see and understand them, and outline approaches for safely resolving the contradiction through movement, manual therapy, or other means. You will be able to ‘volunteer’ to be so analyzed, if you wish, or just observe others if not. Learning the language of the body is both useful and fun. Open to all.
Discussion will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.
From Breath to Bone: Easing Integration in our Constantly Changing Bodies
A workshop on greater resilience with Tom Myers
From the softest sigh to the most rigid of beliefs, our body expresses us perfectly. With just four kinds of cell and one marvelously agile fascial matrix, we create the full panoply of human experience. From a single fertilized ovum spring organs and emotions, from the primal creative urge to bearing the ultimate loss.
Through all this our bodies adapt, mostly for better, but some of it for worse. There are many approaches. In this workshop we will look at posture and movement patterns in the ‘neuromyofascial’ web. Come see how the body shapes and reshapes itself around our passions – those we accept and those we avoid – as well as gravity’s demands.
And then, in view of what we know (and don’t know), what can we do to support our resilience?
Biomechanical efficiency and exercise, of course, but that is only one variable. In this we examine the relations in whole-body communicating systems, particularly the vagal system for stress and distress, the role of proprio- and intero-ception in maintaining equilibrium, and the role of changing hormones on the fascial system..
This workshop is for manual and movement therapists alike who want to understand the patterns of health and dis-ease in our current relation to posture and body movement. Come home with specific ‘bodyreading’ skills, plus the gleanings from a life time in the manual healing arts.
