Menopause MasterClass, presented by Dr. Wendy Sweet

’Did you know that there are numerous women around the world, who breeze through their menopause transition and don’t experience sleepless nights, anxiety, weight gain (or weight loss), sore joints, heart palpitations and depression that many women living in western societies experience?

Have you ever asked yourself why, if menopause is a natural part of our life-stage, how did menopause become an illness that needs to be ‘treated’ rather than a new and healthy stage of life?

I’m Dr Wendy Sweet from New Zealand and it gives me great pleasure to bring you my 2 hour Masterclass on Menopause. Through my doctoral studies on women’s health and ageing, I draw from a number of scientific disciplines to untangle many of the symptoms that women experience and place these up against lifestyle science. It doesn’t matter if women are on menopause medications, but what they may be missing is what to change about their lifestyle. I can’t wait for you to join me at the inaugural Australian Women’s Health Symposium.

About Dr. Wendy Sweet
I never thought I would be designing lifestyle programmes for women going through their menopause transition. But with my own menopause symptom struggles as well as incredible weight gain, and then listening to women during my doctoral studies on women’s healthy aging, this led me to explore this life-stage.
For over 30 years I’ve been part of New Zealand’s vibrant fitness industry. Although my original career was as a former ICU nurse, I re-trained in physical education and then went on to pioneer the personal training industry in New Zealand. Once I left this industry I returned to the university environment, lecturing in a range of sport and exercise papers, nutrition and health physiology and health psychology, which I undertook my masters studies in. But it was doing my doctoral studies in the Faculty of Health, Sport and Human Performance at New Zealand’s University of Waikato, that led me to where I am today. With my desire to better understand women’s healthy aging and the role of exercise during the menopause transition, I undertook my doctoral studies in this area. I learnt that when we go into menopause, which is when we move through the final hormonal changes that herald in the end of our biological reproductive years, then we actually need to change our lifestyle to match this changing hormonal environment.
As we transition into a different hormonal environment, what we’ve done in the past to manage our health, energy and our weight, simply may not work anymore. Not many health coaches and exercise professionals understand this. In 2019, I travelled to Perth, Australia to present my findings to physiotherapists and Personal Trainers, and when I asked if any of them understood the changes that occur to our Musculo-skeletal system during perimenopause and menopause, none of them did. That’s because there’s been very little research on the menopause transition for a cohort of women who are the  irst generation to go into menopause in the context of the phenomenal growth in the fitness industry over the past few decades.
That’s why, as part of the inaugural Australian Women’s Health Summit, it gives me great pleasure to bring my 2 hour Masterclass on Menopause to you. I love helping women feel vital and energetic and healthy again and I’m passionate about all of us realising our midlife potential. I can’t wait for you to join me.
