The Spine and Arms in Motion: Connecting Locomotion Through the Whole Body

Walking and running do not end at the pelvis. The Spine & Arms in Motion continues the journey upward, exploring how movement generated and received through the lower body travels through the spine, rib cage, shoulder girdle, and arms.

Rather than viewing the trunk as a structure that must simply stabilize against movement, this course examines the spine as an active participant in locomotion. Pelvic rotation is met by spinal rotation and counter-rotation; the ribs and thorax adapt; the scapulae move across the rib cage; and the arms participate in the contralateral patterns that organize walking and running.

Through the Anatomy Trains framework, participants will investigate the fascial continuities connecting the pelvis, trunk, shoulders, and upper limbs and consider how these relationships help transmit, redirect, and balance forces throughout the body.

We will explore three-dimensional spinal movement, rib mechanics, thoracic rotation, scapular adaptability, arm swing, contralateral organization, and elastic recoil. Participants will also learn to recognize how restrictions in the spine, ribs, shoulders, or arms can influence movement far beyond the area of restriction.

Using body reading, gait and movement assessment, hands-on work, and movement exploration, we will shift the perspective from isolated regions toward an integrated understanding of locomotion.

The arms are not simply along for the ride, and the spine is not merely a stable column. Together they complete the spiraling, counterbalancing, whole-body conversation of human movement.
