Join Anatomy Trains author Tom Myers for an inspiring exploration of our fascial system, emphasising the rich two-way communication with the neural net. Research shows that our fascial net is our richest sensory organ not only for positional proprioception (stretch and load) but also for physiological interoception (the urge to move).
Emotional states and postural patterns are related through ‘neuromyofascia’ – the intricate bodywide connection between fascial fabric, the autonomic nervous system, and the ‘wash’ of neuro-peptides. Tom will present a variety of new fascial images and review some of the most important insights from the field of fascial research relevant to both the norms and the extremes of human existence.
We will use illustrated lecture, demonstrations, and exercises to explore:
– Body image formation and emotional conditioning – what is maturity?
– The latest fascial research, as applied to therapy
– Important elements of safe touch
– Fascia and proprioception, the sixth (and seventh and eighth) sense
– How do we feel? Mechanoreceptor types and roles in sensation and pain
– Fascia and interoception: motivational visceral and cutaneous receptors
– Myofascial tonicity and autonomic nervous system responses
– Myofascial force transmission lines, with relevance for postural regulation
– Lumbopelvic fascia: architecture and innervation in function and pain
Tom Myers has spent 48 years as a manual therapist and group leader, working to bring more awareness of the fascial system and its contribution to human development and overall health.

Anatomy Trains pioneer Tom joins us for a long weekend of workshops presenting his unique perspective on the fascial system and its contribution to human development and overall health.
This two-day immersion is an Anatomy Trains perspective on breath, diaphragm movement and posture that will give you a new understanding of your core that’s markedly different from the traditional focus on solely the abdominal region. Whether you’re a teacher, manual therapist or practitioner, it will give you a deepened understanding of the relationships between breath and body.
Using a skeleton, exploratory embodiment exercises and self-palpation, Tom will guide you through an anatomical tour of the fascial network of “the deep front line”, starting at the inner ankle and travelling up the inseam of the lower leg and thigh, through the pelvis and trunk and up the front of the spine to the tongue.
You’ll learn the relevant bony landmarks, muscles, and a new level of understanding of the importance of the deep posterior compartment of the lower leg, adductor group, pectineus, illiacus and psoas in helping to maintain a healthy balance with the diaphragm, pelvis, the front of the spine, the involvement of the scalenes and muscles of the neck, and leading up to the tongue. Join us in exploring the deep front line and its involvement in bandhas and breath.
