Andrew Alvarado

Richmond, VA, USA

After graduating from college with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, I spent 10 years as a submarine officer in the United States Navy. During the last couple years of my time on active duty time I developed a daily yoga practice and in my search to find easier movement in my own body I was led to the world of bodywork. I found a local structural integrator and following our sessions, I immediately noticed a difference in the way my body felt as well as the way I felt in my own body. By the end of the first session, I knew that this was the work I wanted to do. I did my Structural Integration training with Tom Myers of KMI (www.anatomytrains.com) and in 2015 became a Board Certified Structural Integrator.

People often comment, “Engineering and structural integration are two different worlds. That seems like a huge shift moving from one to the other.” In my mind, it really isn’t; the only change is the medium. Instead of analyzing stress and strain in the structure of a building, I’m now looking at the structure of an individual person. Where do I see too much stress? Where do I see too much strain? Where and how can I work to bring more ease and balance into this person’s entire structure?

I make this process fun and engaging, cultivating the individual’s own curiosity about their body and the multitude of ways in which it can move and function. In addition to relieving pain and finding ease both in standing and moving, my clients gain the knowledge and the confidence to find their own answers. I find that life is easier when it’s easier to move.
