Join Anatomy Trains senior teacher Michael Watson for another exciting live webinar.

When asked if she could work on only one structure in the body, Ida Rolf is said to have replied: “The 12th rib”.

The 12th rib is often overlooked in both movement education and manual therapy, yet it plays a profound role in structural organization, respiratory mechanics, spinal stability, and fascial continuity throughout the body. As the final and most mobile rib in the thoracic cage, the 12th rib serves as an important attachment site for the diaphragm, quadratus lumborum, transversus abdominis, latissimus dorsi, and thoracolumbar fascia—making it a critical hub within the body’s tensegrity system.

In this in-depth webinar series, we will explore the anatomy, biomechanics, and fascial relationships of the 12th rib through the lens of Structural Integration. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how restrictions, asymmetries, or positional changes of the 12th rib can influence breathing patterns, lumbar stability, pelvic organization, gait, and overall postural balance.

Drawing from Structural Integration principles, functional anatomy, and clinical observation, this course will provide practical assessment strategies working with a model, and hands-on concepts for addressing the 12th rib as part of a whole-body approach rather than as an isolated structure.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and unique characteristics of the 11th and 12th floating ribs, with special emphasis on the 12th rib.
  • Identify the fascial and muscular attachments associated with the 12th rib and their functional significance.
  • Recognize the relationship between the 12th rib, diaphragm function, and respiratory efficiency.
  • Explore how 12th rib positioning can affect lumbar spine mechanics and pelvic alignment.
  • Assess common compensatory patterns involving the thoracolumbar junction and lower rib cage.
  • Understand the role of the 12th rib within the body’s myofascial continuity and tensegrity model.
  • Apply Structural Integration concepts to support greater mobility, stability, and adaptability throughout the body.
  • Develop treatment strategies for integrating the 12th rib into broader session goals and series work.

Topics Covered

Anatomy and Functional Relationships

  • Anatomy of the floating ribs
  • Bony landmarks and palpation considerations
  • Diaphragm attachments and respiratory mechanics
  • Relationship to the thoracolumbar fascia
  • Key muscular connections:
    • Quadratus lumborum
    • Transversus abdominis
    • Latissimus dorsi
    • Internal oblique
    • Diaphragm

The 12th Rib in Structural Integration

  • The 12th rib as a balancing point between thorax and pelvis
  • Fascial continuities and force transmission
  • Influence on side bending, rotation, and gait
  • Common compensatory patterns
  • Structural and functional implications of asymmetry

 Assessment and Clinical Observation

  • Visual and movement assessment strategies
  • Palpation skills and rib mobility evaluation
  • Breathing pattern analysis
  • Identifying restrictions within the thoracolumbar junction
  • Case examples and pattern recognition

 Integrative Applications

  • Manual and movement-based approaches
  • Working with the diaphragm and lower rib cage
  • Integrating the 12th rib into Structural Integration sessions
  • Practical treatment considerations
  • Q&A and clinical discussion

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is designed for:

  • Structural Integration practitioners
  • Rolfers®
  • Manual therapists
  • Massage therapists
  • Osteopathic practitioners
  • Physical therapists
  • Movement educators
  • Yoga and Pilates instructors
  • Bodyworkers interested in fascial anatomy and postural organization

Takeaway

Participants will leave with a new appreciation for the 12th rib as a strategic anatomical landmark that influences far more than the rib cage alone. Through understanding its connections to breath, fascia, spine, and pelvis, practitioners will gain valuable insights for creating more effective and lasting structural change in their clients.

Students will have lifetime access to the recordings.

This course will be provided over Zoom webinar with live chat and Q&A.
