Fascia in the Osteopathic Field
Edited by Torsten Liem, Paolo Tozzi, and Anthony Chila
Fascia is one of the most intriguing body tissues and one of the least understood. In recent years it has been a major focus of interest for both researchers and clinicians from a wide variety of professional fields. In Fascia in the Osteopathic Field the editors offer a multidimensional foundation of fascia from an osteopathic perspective. The carefully selected team of international contributors present and discuss the main information currently available on this tissue from both the research and clinical fields.
The book firstly explores the structural properties of fascia – such as anatomical arrangement, embryological development, biomechanical qualities – from the most superficial to the deeper layers. It then examines the fascia’s functional properties – such as fluidic, immune, hormonal, and neural responses. Finally the text widens its perspective to address the most common manual approaches to treating this tissue, from the more traditional to the most recent ones, touching on their principles, methods of application, indications and mechanisms.
Although the definition of fascia itself is still under debate, our knowledge of it remains far from complete, and it continues to draw experts from different fields to share their data and experience in the attempt to achieve a deeper understanding of its role and function. Fascia in the Osteopathic Field is another example of sharing that knowledge and experience and it is hoped that it will prove to be a step towards a greater understanding of this fascinating tissue.
