Gil Hedley
I met Tom Myers in 1991 at the Rolf Institute, and I happily credit his unbridled enthusiasm for teaching and the delight that he brought to our classroom as a particular inspiration for my own teaching career. At one point Tom led us through an exercise in which we dropped down through the layers of our body and were invited to identify and to experience them specifically. This exercise made a very deep impression on me, as I have spent the last dozen or so years demonstrating and exploring those whole-body layers with groups of students in the course of my 6-Day Intensive Hands-On Human Dissection Workshops, as well as on DVD in The Integral Anatomy Series. I am most grateful for the example Tom set for me of inspired teaching!
What is particularly exciting to me about Tom’s Anatomy Trains is that in them he has crafted from his detailed knowledge of human form an ingenious model for seeing patterns of health and dysfunction which a skillful practitioner can act upon in service to their clients. The utterly complex reality of human form is such that we must approach it with models, useful reductions of reality by definition, so that we might order our understanding in some manner within the oneness of the whole. Tom’s various “lines” are just such a valuable model, giving the practitioner a lens with which to see and a handle with which to manually leverage their clients structural continuities in service of higher function and free, balanced movement. While the awesome reality of the human form transcends any proposed set of discreet “layers” or “lines,” “muscles” or “fascia,” it takes a real visionary to perceive and make useful patterns within the whole.
Thank you Tom! By having the guts and drive to convey your vision to others, many, many people are being brought to a better place in themselves, and that is a great gift!
